Silver Surfers Day!

I couldn't let this pass by without some acknowledgement :> Apparently there are numerous events to celebrate Silver Surfers Day (anyone over 50) - see this site for details. Plus there is an interesting story on the BBC website, see here which extols the virtues of the net for the over 50's and how many now claim that it 'is vital' to them.

I couldn't agree more. It not only helps me keep in touch with my family and gives me access to various games, but it also acts as a massive encyclopedia and allows me to find new graphics, as well as tutorials, for my art projects. And of course, without the net I wouldn't have discovered Artist Trading Cards and be able to swap and trade as I am doing now. Having received loads of ATC's in the post this week - some from swaps, others for private trades - I know that the net has not only opened up to me a new hobby but has allowed me to make new friends and take part in what is, for me, a very beneficial and intriguing activity. And I have a growing folder of work, both produced by me and sent to me by others, to prove it.

So long live the net! I only wish that more people, not just the over 50's, could benefit from it. And I'm all in favour of the government encouraging and helping more people do just that.

Life in general

Just to say for those of you who've been following my blog for a while, that my partner has been back at work for the last 3 weeks and seems to be ok. At the moment, he's only working 3 days a week, and is managing to leave work by 6pm - as he'd often worked until gone 8pm, sometimes as late as 10pm, that in itself is a big improvement. Whether or not he'll continue to be able to keep to the hours he's meant to work is something we'll discover in the weeks to come...

As for me, I finished reading Robin Hobb's "The Tawny Man trilogy" earlier this week. It was excellent, very addictive and highly recommended. My fibromyalgia has been up and down, a bit like the weather - we've had a fair amount of cold weather for May - but has, for the most part, been manageable, apart from a couple of days when I've needed extra naps in the afternoon :). Apart from that, not much to report - just the normal shopping, art and housework routines!

Heavy Metal & Continents

Ooh! Doesn't time just rush by when you're enjoying yourself? I hadn't realised how long it was since the last update! Anyway, I've been working on some atc's for 2 different swaps: Continents (self-explanatory) and Heavy Metal - not the music, but each card to include a metal object. Eventually finished them all last night, see what you think:

continents1
America, Europe and Antarctica
continents2
Africa, Asia and Australia
heavy metal
Asian Treasures 1, 2 and 3
I used old earrings for the metal objects - single ones that I'd lost the partner to months ago and which had been sitting around the house sulking ever since :>

Studios and town hall

On Saturday we went to an exhibition of local history held in Sheffield Town Hall. It was extremely interesting, and I'd never realised how many local history societies and associations existed within the city. It also gave me an opportunity to take some photos of the interior of the Town Hall, which isn't open often to the public.

We also went to an art studio that was open to the public as part of the Open Studios event in the city - an annual event when artists are encouraged to open up their studios to everyone. The buildings occupied by the studios were as interesting as the art, so I stopped to take a few photos before we left. I also took a few pictures of the neighbouring area as it's a part of the city that we seldom visit.

New Direction..

I've decided to change the direction of my blog. For a while, I've been finding it difficult to write on a regular basis and have been considering giving up on my online journal entirely.

However, after some consideration I have decided to keep it going. But there will be fewer written updates and more art and photography instead as my interests have shifted over the last months in that direction. Also, don't expect updates on such a regular basis - new posts will appear as and when I have something to share.

I hope my regular readers will understand and still visit. My thanks to you all for your patience and support.
